CALL FOR PAPERS
INTERNATIONAL JALÂL AL-DÎN AL-DAWÂNÎ SYMPOSIUM
(On the Occasion of the 600th Anniversary of His Birth)
Jalāl al-Dīn al-Dawānī (d. 1502) is a scholar whose influence has spanned centuries, both with the works he wrote in an essential style in the 15th century of the tradition of Islamic thought, and with the students he educated. He was born between 1425 and 1427 in Dawān village of Kāzirūn city, Iran, and received his primary education from his father, Sa’d al-Dīn al-Dawānī, who was a student of Seyyid al-Sharīf al-Jurjānī and was educated by teachers, the majority of whom were students of al-Jurjānī, through his scientific journey. He was the first professor in the Muzaffariyya (Gök) Madrasa built by the Qaraquyunlu Ruler Jahān Shāh in Tabriz, and he taught for a long time in Shiraz, the vital center of the Aqquyunlu State. He spent a significant amount of his life in Shiraz, where he taught many students from various geographies of the time while writing works that became a tradition. An “al-Dawānī School” has emerged in Islamic thought as a result of both the scientific power of his works and their impact on his students.
It is worth noting that al-Dawānī, who held important administrative positions in the Qaraquyunlu and Aqquyunlu, corresponded with Ottoman Sultan Bāyazīd II and maintained scientific contacts with many prominent Ottoman scholars of the 15th century, including Khojazāde. He became one of the leading figures of his time in rational and religious sciences. His Ḥāshiyaʿalâ Sharḥ – al-Tajrīd, Sharḥ al-‘Aqāʾid al-ʿAdudīya, Shawākil al-hūr fî sharh Hayākil al-nūr, Sharḥ Tahẕīb al-manṭıq wa-l-kalām, al-Zawrāʾ al-Ḫawrāʾ, Ithbāt al-Wājib treatises and Akhlāq-i Jalālī are valuable. Because al-Dawânî’s works were the subject of intense consideration and examination in the tradition of Islamic thought, particularly in Ottoman scientific circles in the period following their writing. In addition, some of his works, such as Sharḥ al-‘Aqāʾid al-ʿAdudīya and Ithbât al-Wâjib treatises were taught as textbooks in Ottoman madrasas.
This Symposium has been organized to shed light on al-Dawānî’s career as a scholar and statesman, to collect international literature in this field, and to make eye-opening contributions by facilitating future research.
